Ora Coltman (1858-1940) was a Cleveland artist who received many commissions from the Cleveland Public Library during the Depression. This painting depicts buildings, many of which still exist, in Tremont, a working class neighborhood at the time.
The painting had a large tear in the canvas with corresponding paint loss. A heavy layer of grime had accumulated over the years on the paint surface. The torn canvas was flattened and the tear was repaired with appropriate conservation materials. Surface grime was removed to reveal the artist’s intended color scheme. Losses of paint at the area of the tear were filled and inpainted to match the original.
