William Sommer (1867-1949) was a regional artist and an acknowledged leader of the "Cleveland School." These artists formed the core of an art community whose size and activity paralleled the growth and energy of Cleveland during the period. Sommer co-founded the Kokoon Arts Club, a group of bohemian artists promoting Modernism in Cleveland. Sommer often depicted children in his work, as in this intimate interior scene.
This painting is in good condition. It had a few small areas of lifting paint that were consolidated with an appropriate adhesive. The paint was gently warmed and flattened with a tacking iron, a standard conservation tool.
