This sculpture by Cleveland artist David Davis is peacefully situated in a graceful pool of water and is the central focus of the Beachwood Family Health and Surgery Center. Children delight upon seeing it and ask their parents for pennies to drop into the pool so they can make a wish while other patrons find a quiet corner near the sculpture to rest and watch while they wait for appointments.
In 2011, as part of the routine care for the sculpture, the pool was drained and a scaffold was erected so that the sculpture could be cleaned from top to bottom by ICA staff. This close up view provided by the scaffolding allowed conservators to check over the surface thoroughly for any other signs of wear from age. To help maintain the overall health of the sculpture small areas of corrosion in the white double helix form were removed with abrasives along with any flaking white paint. Once these exposed metal surfaces were prepped for painting, the white paint layer was touched up with industrial paints color-matched by the conservators.
