Richard Buckner was an English painter who studied in Italy and is known for his portraits of the well to do. Miss Mansell's dress is trimmed in lace and she wears a lace shawl. The heavy layer of grime obscured much of the detail in these fashionable accessories.
Although this painting had a discolored varnish layer, most of the darkening was a result of a heavy grime and nicotine layer underneath the varnish. This layer was removed with an aqueous cleaning solution. The painting was then given a thin protective varnish using a stable, reversible synthetic resin.
