This portrait of young George Rising is a very characteristic image painted in the mid-nineteenth century. Artists during this period often traveled extensively, gaining commissions and working quickly to finish portraits for their patrons. Many such paintings are unsigned and require scholarly research to identify the artist.
The painting had some structural problems, including tears and canvas distortions, which were flattened and stabilized. Surface grime and a discolored varnish were removed. The paint surface was given a new stable varnish. Fills and inpainting were carried out with conservation grade materials.
