Jan Victoors (1619-1679), a Dutch artist, was a student of Rembrandt. This painting is a genre scene depicting rural activity typical of the time.
The painting had been previously treated, during which the canvas was attached to a support fabric. This structural reinforcement was in good condition. The paint surface had been overpainted to hide damage and an overall varnish layer had noticeably darkened. These layers were removed to reveal more of the original, which was in surprisingly good condition. Examination of the sky revealed that it was originally more intense in color and had faded over time. This change is irreversible. After application of a stable varnish, losses were filled and inpainted to match the original surface.
