The guitar had the usual historic wear and tear common to a well used guitar with some dirt and grime over the entire surface. In a misguided attempt to catalogue or describe the object the words "Original Drifters' Practice Guitar" were written with a black felt tip marker. Previous attempts were made to remove the writing, which resulted in smearing.
Tests were performed to determine the safest method of removing the felt-tip pen writing on the surface of the guitar. An appropriate solvent was chosen to remove the writing with minimal long-term effect on the varnish of the guitar. Surface grime on the entire guitar was also removed without resulting in an overly polished surface.
